Dominican Republic

Your 2025 Caribbean Must-Visit Destination

With record tourism growth and new luxury developments reshaping its coastline, Dominican Republic continues to evolve as a Caribbean destination that offers everything from cultural experiences to world-class resorts. Here's your guide to DR's top regions and why 2025 is the time to visit.
Picture

Puerto Plata: Northern Coast's Cultural Hub

Fresh from my recent visit aboard MSC Seascape, I was very excited to get to know Puerto Plata's renovation of Taino Bay cruise port that has transformed access to the city. Just minutes from the historic center, this modern facility makes exploring the north coast easier than ever. Unfortunately, the day-long pouring rain and windy weather did not allow me to walk around. Puerto Plata still has a special place in my heart and I love having this stop on my Caribbean cruises.

Must-Experience*:
  • San Felipe Fortress (16th century) with spectacular coastal views
  • Mount Isabel de Torres cable car ride and botanical gardens
  • Amber Coast beaches, from lively Playa Dorada to serene Playa Sosúa
*Always make sure you double check private tour prices, compare to local taxi prices and transit times to make sure that you have enough time to explore without breaking the bank or missing the ship.

Punta Cana Region: Finding Your Perfect Beach Match

The eastern tip of DR remains the country's tourism powerhouse, with distinct areas catering to different family needs:
Cap Cana: Luxury Family Experience
  • Gated community with enhanced security
  • Pristine Juanillo Beach with calm waters perfect for young children
  • High-end resorts with extensive kids' programs
  • Marina for family fishing trips and boat excursions
  • Punta Espada Golf Course for golf-loving parents

Bavaro: The All-Around Family Favorite
  • Wide beaches with natural swimming areas
  • Largest concentration of family-friendly all-inclusives
  • Shopping centers within walking distance
  • Water parks and entertainment complexes
  • Best value for families seeking activities and amenities

Arena Gorda: Active Family Zone
  • Excellent for water sports and beach activities
  • Mix of premium and mid-range resorts
  • Popular spot for teens who want water adventures
  • Wider beaches, great for beach walks and sports

Macao: Adventure Seekers' Paradise
  • Less developed, more natural beach setting
  • Popular for surf lessons (great for teens)
  • Horseback riding tours
  • Local food stands for authentic Dominican flavors

Cabeza de Toro: Quiet Family Retreat
  • Smaller, more intimate resorts
  • Protected beach area, calmer waters
  • Nature reserve with lagoons
  • Great for families seeking a quieter pace

Plus:
  • Direct flights from major U.S. and European cities
  • 15-30 minute transfer times between areas
  • Easy day trips between beaches
  • Modern medical facilities nearby (important for families with young children)

La Romana: Luxury Meets History

Home to Casa de Campo Resort and the famous Teeth of the Dog golf course, La Romana offers:
  • Altos de Chavón, a recreated 16th-century Mediterranean village
  • High-end shopping and dining
  • Saona Island day trips
  • Premium golf experiences

Miches: The Rising Star

This emerging destination on the northeast coast is turning heads with new luxury developments:
  • Four Seasons Miches opening in 2025
  • Pristine beaches without crowds
  • Montaña Redonda's Instagram-famous swings
  • Access to Los Haitises National Park

Why Book Now? Wave Season Makes Perfect Timing

Wave Season (January through March) brings the year's best Caribbean deals:
  • Reduced deposits on cruise bookings
  • Free upgrade offers
  • Inclusive drink and Wi-Fi packages
  • Additional perks for booking 2025-26 sailings early
  • Our exclusive benefits and offers often include onboard credit, hosted sailings, VIP welcome packages, spa or dining credit, private drivers and shared transportation, and more.

Multiple Ways to Experience DR

Cruise Options:
  • Most of the cruise lines sailing the Caribbean stop at Dominican Republic, such as MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, etc.
  • Dominican Republic offers multiple cruise port terminals in different locations, so, before arranging your land activities, ensure that you consider the correct cruise port where your ship will stop for the day.
  • In 2024 and 2025, Dominican Republic has become one of the main destinations for new ships - including the Sun Princess, Explora II and MSC World America - and new itineraries on existing cruises, including Adventure of the Seas.
Land Packages:
Dominican Republic is one of the most popular destinations for travelers from all over the world. As an island with such a rich culture and so many beautiful beaches, it is a shame that so many travelers narrow down their options to the resorts in Punta Cana. So you do not make the same mistake, when planning your land package, ensure to consider:
  • Multi-destination tours combining regions
  • Luxury resort stays
  • Adventure and cultural immersion packages

Looking Ahead to 2025-26

With new resorts opening, cruise ships adding DR to their itineraries, and improved infrastructure connecting different regions, Dominican Republic offers more options than ever for every travel style and budget.
Whether you're interested in a cruise stop, a luxury resort stay, or a multi-destination experience combining several regions, now is the perfect time to lock in your 2025-26 Dominican Republic plans with Wave Season deals in full swing.
If you are a business owner or organize events for your employer, consider the Dominican Republic for your next corporate conference or incentive travel.

Let us help you plan that perfect trip to the Dominican Republic!

MSC Cruises: What You Need to Know About This Growing Cruise Line (And Their Big Plans for 2025)
It's been a while since my last post here. Time does fly by when we're having fun (cough...working a lot...cough). Just came back from spending Christmas on MSC Seascape a couple weeks ago, and I want to share key insights about MSC Cruises - both what works and what doesn't - to help you decide if this cruise line is right for your next vacation. As a travel advisor with Brazilian and American clients, I do hear all types of feedback and questions regarding MSC Cruises and I hope this post will help clarify some of those for you all, dear traveler readers.
Please, keep in mind that this is NOT a post about my experience aboard the MSC Seascape, that you can read more about here. This is a more "technical" post about what I know and what I have experienced through personal experiences on MSC and from clients' feedback.

The MSC Experience: European Style Meets American Market

MSC Cruises operates 22 ships globally, with their newest ships - MSC Seaside (2017), MSC Seashore (2021), and MSC Seascape (2022) - each carrying around 5,632 passengers mainly sailing from American ports. First hint on how focused on entering the American market MSC has been. Their European heritage shows in the ship design, with standout features like Swarovski crystal staircases and gelaterias (Venchi, yummy) throughout, besides beautifully decorated intimate spaces (The Wine Cellar) and incredible outdoor spaces (Infinity Bridge).
Let's be direct: MSC is a mass-market cruise line still adapting to American preferences. Bar service can be slow, food is more European-styled, and the kids' and teen activities aren't as extensive as other mainstream cruise lines. But they're actively working to address these areas.
That's where MSC World America comes in, arriving in Miami in April 2025. This new ship was specifically built to tackle those challenges MSC initially had when adapting to the American market with features like an over-the-edge swing and The Harbour - an outdoor family zone with a two-story ropes course and zip lines. These additions show MSC's commitment to improving their family offerings.

Smart Money-Saving Tip: Status Match Program

Here's something valuable: MSC is the only cruise line offering status matching from other cruise lines and even hotel chains. If you have status with Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor or Marriott Bonvoy, for example, you can request a MSC status match using their website. This isn't a temporary promotion - once matched, you keep the status as long as you continue sailing with MSC.
The benefits are many, but the most valuable to me is the 5% discount on cruise fares, combinable with other discounts like the additional 5% for booking 9-12 months ahead. During Wave Season (January-March), these stackable discounts can lead to significant savings.

Yacht Club: The Premium Experience Within MSC

While MSC is a mass-market line, their Yacht Club offers a premium "ship within a ship" experience. In my experience, this is the most affordable luxury experience at sea today. So, enjoy while it lasts because as I have been warning y'all, MSC prices will adjust to the quality of the brand soon and these incredibly low cruise fares will be gone sooner than we may expect. Here's what you get on a Yatch Club Experience:
  • All-inclusive premium beverages and Wi-Fi
  • Butler service and dedicated concierge
  • Private restaurant, pool area, and lounge
  • Priority embarkation and disembarkation
  • Exclusive area at Ocean Cay
Yacht Club guests earn loyalty points faster, making it an efficient way to climb the status ladder while enjoying enhanced service and amenities. My expert tip is: the BEST way of taking the most from all the exclusive spaces and services that Yatch Club offers is during high season, such as Spring Break, Summer and Holidays. These are the times when the ships (all of them) will be closer to maximum capacity, with a lot of families traveling, and having priority embarkation and disembarkation, as well as a private pool - while also being able to enjoy the rest of the ship as you'd like - is GOLD!

Ocean Cay Tips: Beyond Lighthouse Bay

Ocean Cay, MSC's private island in the Bahamas, has seven beaches including one exclusively for Yacht Club guests. Most passengers stay at Lighthouse Bay near the ship, but this beach gets crowded quickly. Use the free tram service to explore the other beaches - several offer live music and plenty of space to spread out.
During my Christmas 2024 cruise on MSC Seascape, I saw so many people complaining about having no available chairs for them on Lighthouse Bay and lounging on the sand. When I knew the other beaches had plenty of space for basically another entire ship full of passengers if needed - because I had just done my walk around the island and saw it.
Now, important to keep in mind is that Ocean Cay is a natural reserve and has a completely different vibe from other private islands in the Bahamas, like Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at Cococay and Carnival's RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay (or their exciting Celebration Key coming soon Summer 2025). Ocean Cay is more relaxing and what you would expect from a Bahamian secluded beach. They still have food and bar service, but no huge water parks or bombastic beach clubs.

Looking Ahead: 2025-2026 Updates

Key changes coming:
  • MSC World America arrives in Miami (April 2025)
  • MSC Seascape moves to Galveston
  • MSC Poesia starts Alaska sailings (Summer 2026)
If you're interested in World America's summer or holiday 2025 sailings, booking NOW with a refundable deposit lets you take advantage of Wave Season deals plus early booking discounts.
Need help navigating MSC's options and booking the right experience for your travel style? Let's talk about what you're looking for and find the best fit - whether that's a family vacation on World America or a premium getaway in Yacht Club.
